Log 168; Day 466; August 30, 2009; Cape May, NJ.

Cape May, NJ is a cool spot...here are a few pictures to give you a little "feel" of the town

About a 2 minute walk from our marina is a complex with several restaurants in it. One of them is this schooner
Another one is this deck, overlooking a marina

This is a busy place about noon.
On Friday and Saturday the storms rolled through our area...courtesy of Tropical Storm Danny

They looked very wicked, both on radar, and to watch the sky. But, we did not have any damaging winds.

Yesterday, this big catamaran came into the marina

I'm sure they have a problem in several places finding slip that will accommodate their beam

Day 466

7:0 AM EDT
Location: Utsch’s Marina; Cape May, NJ.
Weather: 70 and cloudy; 60% chance of rain and 85 today

Hurricane Danny was a non event here in Cape May. I really feel bad for those folks who had hurricane parties (not). Yesterday we had lots of rain early in the morning, but the afternoon was nice. This morning, the rain has passed through again, and the clouds are starting to break up. The wind is almost calm, and they say it will get to 85 today.

We are on our 4th day here in Cape May. On Thursday and Friday the weather was not that great, so we just walked around the area. Yesterday (Saturday) we were both a little antsy to get out, so after the rain passed in the morning, we got our bikes out rode into the town of Cape May. It’s not the easiest ride, because you are dodging traffic, and then ride about 1 1/2 miles on sidewalks into town, but, it’s not bad, and the ride is worth it. Cape May is a cool spot. If you have ever seen any movies showing small beach towns...you have seen Cape May. The boats; the beach; the shops; the restaurants; all just like they are supposed to be. Yesterday they had a parade along Beach Street...celebrating their 400th year.

We rode our bikes to Washington Square, which is like a 4 or 5 block main street, closed to cars, and full of shops and places to eat. After a great lunch, we rode to the grocery store to get a few things. (Side Note; when we shop at places like this, it is not as much about what’s on your shopping list...it’s more about what you can carry. Deb has a great assortment of “green bags” that we use instead of grocery bags, and we hang them over the handle bars. At first this seems like a real pain...then you discover this is the only way...so you make it work) Anyway...after filling 4 bags full, we checked out and headed back to the boat. We left at 11...back at 2. Dinner on the boat was BLT’s and sweet corn...the movie was “Dave”. Great movie.

Today...we plan to take a long dinghy ride and explore the area. There are lots of marina’s and lots of boats to see. This is a mecca for fishing...and fishing boats. It makes me wonder if I should get my fishing license, but we will only be in NJ a few more days, so I’m not sure if it’s worth it. But it will be fun checking everything out, by dinghy.

Travel plans...are a bit in the air at this point. We originally were going to stay here 3 days, and leave today (Sunday), but have decided to stay until later in the week. First of all, we really are in no hurry, because the next major stop will be Baltimore, where we will probably spend a month. Secondly, after today, the winds are going to switch to the NE and blow 15 to 30 for the next few days. The next real nice days do not come until Friday. So...at this point...we’ll leave when the winds calm down. Finally, we have some friends in Lewes, DE (pronounced Louis) and we are thinking of taking the Ferry from Cape May to Lewes next week and seeing them.

I’ll keep you posted.

Bob
